Josh Charow Artwatch Article on NYC Artist Lofts, Loft Law

Joshua Charow's short documentary featuring Frank Mason's NYC art studio and the Mason Estate move to Pittsburgh, PA
"Leaving an NYC Artist Loft After 66 Years"

About Frank Mason

The late Frank Mason was a painter and instructor at the Art Students League of New York who taught three generations of artists how to capture form and motion of subject matter revealed by light and atmosphere using the techniques of Renaissance and Baroque classical methods. In addition to Mason’s ability to paint portraits in the grand manner, he traveled extensively throughout the United States and Europe to produce a prolific body of landscape paintings. Mason believed that painting and illustration is not about copying the subject. It’s about capturing the choicest sensations it has made upon the artist and that nature inspires the artist in all its forms.

FAREWELL NYC!

Farewell NYC! - Frank Mason

In 1958 Frank Mason established his work studio on the top floor of 385 Broome Street in Manhattan's historic Little Italy neighborhood.  Mason then moved to Italy in 1964 where he met his wife, Anne, in Rome.  They moved back to New York City in 1966, married and made their home here, eventually converting the 4th floor of the building into a private gallery space.  After Frank's passing in 2009 Anne continued to live in and preserve this stunning artist loft space until 2023 when she and the Frank Mason estate relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
